After our
evacuation from the Central African Republic (CAR), we can testify to God's
faithfulness during our time in this war-torn country.
We spent our
first term overseas in the CAR, where Gary directed the Assemblies of God
Bible Institute. In addition, he led numerous outreach efforts and helped
plant new churches.
Sheryl had a
burden for the women in the country, many of whom could not read the Bible in
their own language. In response to this need, she helped to start a
literacy program for women in the Assemblies of God in CAR.
During our term in Africa, we went
through three military uprisings. Our final test came when armed rebel
troops invaded our home in a looting rampage. During these horrific
moments, a drunken soldier struck Sheryl—four months pregnant at the
time—knocking her unconscious, while other rebel troops held their guns to
Gary's head, screaming that they were going to kill him. Through a series
of miraculous interventions, the Lord spared our lives and we were later
evacuated from the country.
At the end of
2005, as we were preparing to return to Africa, the Holy Spirit began to
speak to us about a part of the world which desperately needs God's message
of hope—the
former communist stronghold of Yugoslavia.
As we prayed
about this burden for several months, one country kept returning to our
minds again and again—Slovenia.
