Colorado Cowboy Camp Meeting

On July 4, 1955 Joe Evans, at the invitation of Elmo Favor and Pete Gooch, spoke to a gathering of cutting horse contestants at the Peak View Ranch east of Kiowa.  Joe was acquainted with the cowboys' ways, being raised in the Davis Mountains of West Texas on his father's large cattle ranch.  Joe sought to bring church to the cowboys since many would not come to church.

Joe and Elmo spoke to Hank and Ann Smith about starting a camp meeting on their ranch and on a cold windy day in November, 1955 the three men picked a place which has been the location of the Colorado Cowboy Camp Meeting every year since July, 1956.

At the first meeting the Men's prayer tree was branded with a '56 to commemorate the event.  As the years progressed, a pavilion was built to provide a covering for cooking facilities and dining hall where three chuck wagon style meals are served daily.  Restrooms and a bathhouse were added as well as a preacher's cabin.  Ample camping space is available for tents, campers, and RV's.  No electricity is available at the campsites.  Four daily Christian meetings are held for all attendees in a large open tent and children and youth meet twice a day in their smaller open tents.

You don't have to be a cowboy to attend!  Reservations are not necessary and everyone is encouraged to come and join us.
